Whole-car prices from Victoria to the airport, read on each firm's own page: Get London Transfer £64 (4 seats, 2 cases), MiniCabRide £79 (4 seats, 2 cases), London Airport Taxi £79 (3 seats, 2 cases), Tranzitt £90, Airport Pickups London £117 (3 seats, 3 cases) and Blackberry Cars £132 (4 seats, 2 cases). Get London Transfer, Airport Pickups London and Blackberry Cars charge the same as for the trip from Gatwick; London Airport Taxi gives one price for both directions; the MiniCabRide and Tranzitt pages price only this direction. On the way to the airport the forecourt drop-off charge matters: London Airport Taxi builds in the £10 Gatwick drop-off charge and the Congestion Charge where it applies, Tranzitt's price includes parking charges, and Get London Transfer includes parking and adds nothing before dawn. The other firms state no drop-off figure. Stated road times run from 50 minutes (Get London Transfer) to 84 minutes (MiniCabRide), and Get London Transfer warns that peak traffic adds 30 to 45 minutes. Airport Cars Gatwick, the airport's official private hire operator, publishes no fares.

Which should I pick?

  • Early flight

    TrainSouthern

    Southern via Clapham Junction

The 04:30 Southern from Victoria is due at the airport at 05:12, 33 minutes before the first Gatwick Express arrives; no earlier train runs.

  • Lots of luggage

Private transferPre-booked private hire (2 firms)

Pre-booked estate car from your door

Being collected at your door spares you the Tube or bus into Victoria and the crowded concourse with cases, though you should leave earlier than for the train.

  • Group or family

    TrainSouthern

    Southern via Clapham Junction

Off-peak, five adults on Southern pay £53.50 between them, while five people with luggage need more than a saloon, and six-seat MPVs are published at £74 to £174; only in the weekday peaks, when the five pay £96.00, can the cheapest car undercut the train.

  • After midnight

    CoachNational Express

National Express from Victoria Coach Station

Once the 00:08 Southern has left there is no train from Victoria until 04:30, while the 02:00 coach from Victoria Coach Station is due at the North Terminal at 03:05.

Route notes

Both trains from Victoria end at the station built into Gatwick's South Terminal; neither goes on to the North Terminal. If your airline checks in there, the free two-minute shuttle leaves from beside the station, so add the ride and the wait for it to the 31 to 33 minutes on the train before you compare the total with your airline's bag-drop cut-off.

Victoria's main-line platforms sit level with the main entrance, and the station is step-free throughout. Look for trains to Gatwick Airport on the screens. Southern sends about four an hour in the daytime and needs 33 minutes; the Gatwick Express goes at 29 and 59 minutes past and takes 31. Late at night Southern gets much slower: the 00:08, the final direct departure, needs 55 minutes.

Contactless works at the Victoria gates, but the price depends on when you go through them. Southern charges £10.70, jumping to £19.20 for journeys started from 06:30 to 09:30 and 16:00 to 19:00 on weekdays. The Gatwick Express is £24.00 at any hour. So if you are heading off in the late-afternoon rush for an evening flight, the saving from choosing Southern is at its smallest.

For a dawn flight, the first train is the 04:30 Southern, due at 05:12, followed by the 05:05 Gatwick Express, due at 05:45. Between 00:08 and 04:30 nothing runs by rail. National Express coaches leave from Victoria Coach Station, a separate building on Buckingham Palace Road, from 02:00. The route also serves Heathrow, so the timings vary more than the train's.

A car avoids Victoria entirely but is slower than either train, at 50 to 84 minutes depending on traffic, so book the pickup well ahead of when you would otherwise walk to the platform.
