Gatwick asks passengers to arrive at least two hours before their flight, so a 06:00 departure means being at the airport by 04:00. On the weekday we checked, public transport makes that from St Pancras and East Croydon by overnight Thameslink train, and from Victoria and Brighton by overnight coach. It does not by train from Victoria or Heathrow, where the first trains arrive too late, and we could not confirm any overnight train from London Bridge. Times below are for Tuesday 29 September 2026, were checked on 2026-09-27 and can change; weekends and engineering work often differ.
How early is early enough
Gatwick’s general advice is at least two hours before departure, and your airline’s bag-drop or gate deadline overrides it. Check-in usually opens about four hours before a long-haul flight and two hours before a UK or Ireland flight; for European flights Gatwick’s own pages disagree between three and four hours. Boarding usually starts 45 to 60 minutes before departure and there are no announcements, so watch the screens.
All trains arrive at the South Terminal. If you fly from the North Terminal, add the free shuttle, a two-minute ride plus the wait. The coach from Victoria reaches the North Terminal first; the one from Brighton reaches the South Terminal first.

What that means for each origin
Victoria. Gatwick Express is not the first train out. The 04:30 Southern arrives 33 minutes before the first Gatwick Express, for £10.70 instead of £24.00. Neither suits a 06:00 or 07:00 flight on the two-hour rule: the 04:30 arrives at 05:12. For those, the 02:00 coach or a car is the realistic choice. For an 08:00 flight the 04:30 Southern gives you plenty of margin.
St Pancras. The overnight Thameslink ran hourly on the weeknight we checked, each train taking 58 minutes. The 02:32 covers a 06:00 flight, the 03:32 anything from about 06:30. On a weekend night we sampled in the other direction, engineering work removed the direct service altogether, so check the night before.
East Croydon. The best-served origin for dawn flights. The 03:07 Thameslink covers a 06:00 departure, the 04:07 anything from about 06:30, and the first Southern at 04:59 suits flights from about 07:30.
Brighton. The 02:50 coach runs every day from Old Steine, not the railway station, and suits a 06:00 flight from the South Terminal; allow about 15 minutes more to the North Terminal. The later early coaches suit flights from about 07:00. We could not confirm the first train times from Brighton, though the ticket office opens at 03:45. Gatwick Express does not serve Brighton on Sundays.
London Bridge. We have not published a first train because no source we trust confirmed one. The ticket office opens at 04:45 Monday to Saturday and 05:25 on Sunday, and contactless works without it. Look up the first southbound Thameslink in the National Rail journey planner the evening before; if it does not fit, a car is the fallback.
Heathrow. Rail is no use for this window, because the first connection arrives at 06:44. The coaches leaving the Central Bus Station at 03:40 to 04:15 suit flights from about 07:30 at the North Terminal. For a 06:00 departure, the choice is the 00:40 coach and a long wait, or a car.
When nothing runs early enough
Take the last service the night before. The last direct train from Victoria is the 00:08 Southern, due at 01:03. From St Pancras, trains left at 23:54, 00:24 and 00:54 before the hourly overnight pattern. From Heathrow the last rail connection leaves at 23:38 and arrives at 01:22. Gatwick station is staffed around the clock, but arriving at one in the morning for a dawn flight means several hours waiting in the terminal.
Take the overnight coach. National Express listed online from-prices of £6.00 from Victoria Coach Station, £8 from Brighton and £14.90 from Heathrow, each including a booking fee; seats at those prices are limited, so the fare you are offered may be higher. The allowance is one large case or two medium ones plus a soft bag. For one person on a budget, this is usually the right answer before 04:00.
Book a car. Published car prices on the route pages ran from £48 to £60 from Croydon, £60 to £80 from Brighton (saloon to eight-seater), £66 to £117 from London Bridge, £78 to £120 from St Pancras, £62 to £108 from Heathrow and £131 to £174 from Victoria (saloon to six-seat MPV). On the published journey times a car is slower than the direct train from every origin that has one; what it buys is a pickup at your door at a fixed time. From Victoria, one traveller pays over 20 times the coach from-price, so it makes sense mainly for a group, heavy bags or a flight before the coach can deliver you.
The weekday pattern above does not hold every night. Weekend engineering work, school-holiday timetable changes such as 24 to 31 October 2026, and disruption can remove the overnight trains, so check the National Rail journey planner the day before. To turn a flight time into a departure time, use the leave-by calculator. Route details: Victoria, London Bridge, St Pancras, Brighton, East Croydon, Heathrow.
