Our pickTrainThameslink28–35 min£14.50–£15.10Thameslink runs direct from the station in the South Terminal to London Bridge up to eight times an hour, taking 28 to 35 minutes, and a contactless card or phone tapped at the gates is all the ticket you need. A pre-booked saloon costs £108 to £120 at the fixed prices four firms publish and takes 56 minutes or more, so it only pays off for a group sharing the fare or a landing in the small hours.

Gatwick and London Bridge both have lifts and step-free access to every platform, so cases can roll from South Terminal arrivals to the street at Tooley Street without a single stair.

For three or four people the cheapest published saloon, £108, still costs more than four walk-up train fares, so the car wins on comfort rather than price; check the seats, as two of the four firms list a saloon for three.

We could not confirm an overnight Thameslink service to London Bridge, so a car booked against your flight number is the one option here that does not hinge on the night timetable.
Route notes
Thameslink leaves from the same South Terminal station as every other train at Gatwick, roughly five minutes on foot from South Terminal arrivals; North Terminal arrivals reach it on the free two-minute shuttle. There are lifts down to the platforms, so a large case is no obstacle.
At the gates, tap the same contactless card or phone you will tap out with at London Bridge. If you would rather hold a paper ticket, the Gatwick ticket office is listed as open around the clock. If you already know which train you will catch, an advance ticket booked earlier can undercut the walk-up fare.
On the departure boards, look for Thameslink. The northbound trains are labelled with places far beyond London, such as Bedford, Cambridge or Peterborough, which can throw a tired traveller, but they run through London Bridge. Do not board the Gatwick Express by mistake: it runs non-stop to Victoria, which is on the other side of the river from where you want to be.
At London Bridge, Thameslink trains use through platforms 4 and 5. The Jubilee line and the Bank branch of the Northern line connect within the station, and the street exits come out on Tooley Street and St Thomas Street, handy for Borough, Bermondsey and the City.
A car is worth considering in two situations: three or four of you splitting one fare, or a landing after the trains have thinned out. The firms we checked quote between 56 minutes and more than an hour and a half by road, so in daytime the train is almost always quicker. We found no coach running from Gatwick to London Bridge; National Express points its London services at Victoria.
