Which should I pick?
Early flight
TrainThameslinkThameslink direct
Landing before dawn still leaves you a direct train: on the weekday night checked, departures for St Pancras ran at 01:45, 02:45 and 03:45, then 04:20 and 04:41, so there is no need to wait for daylight or a driver.
Lots of luggage
Private transferPre-booked private hire (3 firms)Pre-booked estate car to St Pancras
If you cannot lift your cases on and off a train alone after a long flight, a driver waiting in arrivals takes them to the kerb at St Pancras; one firm's estate car takes three large cases and its 6-seat MPV six.
Group or family
TrainThameslinkThameslink direct
Even landing in the weekday morning peak, four fares at £19.20 total £76.80, still under the cheapest £78 saloon quote, and Thameslink drops the group under the same roof as Eurostar with no change of train.
After midnight

On weeknights the train keeps running roughly hourly, taking about an hour, so check the planner for weekend engineering work and you can skip the taxi queue.
Route notes
Have your contactless card or phone out as you walk the five minutes from arrivals to the South Terminal station, rather than queuing at a machine; you touch out with the same one at St Pancras. From the North Terminal, the free two-minute shuttle comes first, plus whatever wait there is for the next car.
Only Thameslink runs straight to St Pancras. Gatwick Express, whatever the name suggests, heads for Victoria, and taking it means a change onto the Victoria line with your bags. On the weekday midday we checked, the fastest Thameslink runs took 44 minutes and a slower one took 56, so look at the arrival time on the screen before jumping on whichever train is in.
From Gatwick the contactless peak fare applies only when you touch in between 06:30 and 09:30 on a weekday. If your flight lands around nine, a coffee before the gates can cut the fare from £19.20 to £10.70. There is no evening peak in this direction.
Connecting to a Eurostar? Eurostar asks Standard and Plus passengers to arrive 75 minutes before departure and shuts its ticket gates 30 minutes before. Add up to an hour for the train, plus the walk from the Thameslink platforms up to Eurostar check-in, and do not book a tight connection after an arrival that could be delayed at passport control.
Overnight trains ran about hourly on the weeknight we checked, but the weekend night we sampled had no direct service at all because of engineering work, and the planner offered a long detour. Check before leaving the terminal. If the line is shut, the official taxi desks sit in both terminals, though they publish no St Pancras price.
