Gatwick Routes

Landing at Gatwick after midnight: what still runs

Trains, coaches and cars from Gatwick in the small hours, by destination: night Thameslink, the Victoria gap, night coaches and when a car is the answer.

Updated Decision

After midnight, rail only helps if your destination is on the Thameslink line north through East Croydon to St Pancras. On the weeknights we checked, a train left Gatwick roughly once an hour: 00:42, 01:45, 02:45 and 03:45. Gatwick Express and the direct Southern trains to Victoria had stopped by then. For Victoria, Heathrow and Brighton the options are a night coach or a car. The times below come from a weekday timetable checked on 2026-09-27. Weekend nights are often different, and all of it can change.

The blanks are deliberate. We could not confirm night trains to London Bridge or Brighton from a source we trust, so we have not guessed. Look them up in the National Rail journey planner for your date before you fly.

The night pattern on the railway

Thameslink is the only line that keeps going. On the weeknight we checked, it ran about once an hour from Gatwick, leaving at 00:42 and then at 45 minutes past each hour until 03:45. Departures picked up again at 04:20 and 04:41. Night trains are slower than daytime ones. East Croydon took 19 to 27 minutes instead of 15, and St Pancras took about an hour. If you miss one, the next is an hour away, so head for the station as soon as you clear arrivals.

Southern stops early. The last direct train to Victoria left at 23:55, and the next was not until 05:38. That leaves Victoria with no train for more than five and a half hours.

Gatwick Express is not an overnight service. Its last train from the airport was at 23:11. It is no use to anyone landing late.

Weekends and Sunday mornings

Weekend nights are where plans fail. On the one weekend night we sampled, Saturday into Sunday 4 October 2026, engineering work removed the direct Thameslink service to St Pancras until morning. GWR ran extra overnight trains to and from Gatwick in the early hours of Saturdays and Mondays over the summer, but that ended on 12 September 2026.

We have not confirmed first trains on a Sunday for Southern or Gatwick Express, or for Brighton on any day. If you land late on a Friday or Saturday, or early on a Sunday, check the planner for that exact night. Our weekday times are not a promise.

Night coaches

National Express keeps running when most of the railway stops. The times that matter after midnight:

  • Victoria Coach Station: the 01:00 from the South Terminal, due at 02:15. The coach station is on Buckingham Palace Road, in a separate building from the railway station.
  • Heathrow: the 01:10, due at Heathrow Central at 03:05. The last one before it is the 23:45. National Express does not say which Gatwick terminal the 01:10 leaves from, so check your ticket.
  • Brighton: the 025 on weeknights leaves the North Terminal at 01:50, 02:40 and 03:40. It calls at the South Terminal about ten minutes later and reaches Old Steine rather than Brighton station.

Coaches leave from the lower level outside International Arrivals at the North Terminal, and from the lower forecourt at the South Terminal. The sources disagree on exact stop numbers, so read the stop on your booking. At night, allow for the walk: some stops, especially at the North Terminal, are five to ten minutes from the terminal building, and each has a help point. Book online or in the app before you land, since you cannot tap a card on board.

When a car is the answer

A pre-booked car is the fallback when the gap between services is longer than you want to wait, or when your destination has no night option at all. The quotes on our route pages are:

When a car is the answer
Destination Pre-booked car (quotes found) Road time quoted
East Croydon £48 to £60, saloon 25 to 45 minutes
Heathrow £62 to £108, saloon 45 to 70 minutes
London Bridge £66 to £117, saloon 55 to 97 minutes
Brighton £70 to £90, saloon to 8-seater (guide price) About 45 minutes
St Pancras £78 to £126, saloon 70 to 105 minutes
Victoria £131 to £174, saloon to 6-seat MPV 50 to 70 minutes

For one person heading to St Pancras on a weeknight, the 01:45 train costs £10.70 on contactless, against at least £78 for a car. For four people going to Victoria at 01:30, the next train is hours away and a car starts to make sense. The break-even calculator works this out for your group size.

If you have not pre-booked, Airport Cars Gatwick, the airport’s official taxi firm, has desks in both terminals. It quotes a fixed price, takes card or cash, and can be reached on +44 (0)1293 550000. It publishes no price list, so ask for the quote before you get in.

Where to wait

The railway station is inside the South Terminal and is staffed around the clock, with a ticket office open through the night. If you land at the North Terminal, the free inter-terminal shuttle runs 24 hours a day. Allow for a wait at night, because the airport publishes no night frequency.

Luggage trolleys are not allowed on the platforms, and left luggage is closed between 22:00 and 04:00. Wait on the concourse or in the terminal, not on the platform, and watch the screens.

Heading the other way

Flying out at dawn is the mirror image. From Victoria, no train leaves between 00:08 and 04:30, but a coach leaves Victoria Coach Station at 02:00. From St Pancras, weeknight Thameslink trains left at 01:32, 02:32 and 03:32. The leave-by calculator turns these into a departure time for your flight.

Every time and price here was checked on 2026-09-27, mostly against a single weekday night. Night timetables and engineering work change often, so confirm with the operator before you travel.
