Gatwick Airportto London Victoria
Our pickTrainSouthern32–46 min£10.70–£19.20Take a Southern train from the station inside the South Terminal: it reaches Victoria in about 32 minutes at midday, leaves about four times an hour and costs £10.70 off-peak on contactless. The Gatwick Express is only a minute or so quicker, runs half-hourly and charges £24.00, so it is worth it only when it happens to be the next train out.

Which should I pick?
Early flight
TrainSouthernSouthern via Clapham Junction
Off an early arrival, the 05:38 Southern is the first direct train and reaches Victoria at 06:11, six minutes ahead of the first Gatwick Express, which leaves three minutes later.
Lots of luggage
Private transferPre-booked private hire (3 firms)Pre-booked estate car to your door
A driver meets you in arrivals and unloads at your door, so you skip the terminal-to-platform walk, the ticket gates and the Victoria taxi queue with every case.
Group or family
TrainSouthernSouthern via Clapham Junction
Four adults tapping in off-peak pay £42.80 between them on Southern, against published saloon prices of £64 to £132 for a car that takes only two large cases; at the £19.20 fare for a 06:30 to 09:30 weekday start the four pay £76.80, more than the cheapest saloon, so compare quotes if you land in the morning peak.
After midnight

The last direct train to Victoria leaves at 23:55 and the next at 05:38, so a delayed late flight is best covered by a car that tracks your landing time.
Route notes
Gatwick has one railway station and it sits inside the South Terminal. If you land at the North Terminal, follow the signs for the South Terminal to the free shuttle: it runs every few minutes around the clock and the ride takes two minutes, then the station is a short walk from where it drops you. The station has lifts and step-free access to every platform, which matters when you are pushing a trolley after a long flight.
You do not need a paper ticket. Tap a contactless card or phone at the gate here and again at Victoria. On Southern that costs £10.70, rising to £19.20 only if you start between 06:30 and 09:30 on a weekday. The Gatwick Express charges £24.00 whatever the time, and it sits outside the daily caps, so it will not count towards a day of Tube travel afterwards.
Both operators run from the same station to the same Victoria concourse, and the difference in speed is small: 31 minutes non-stop against 32 on Southern at midday, with Southern calling at Clapham Junction and East Croydon on the way. Look at the departure screen and board whichever Victoria train leaves first. Late in the evening Southern slows to between 36 and 46 minutes, and the last direct departure is 23:55.
The coach only makes sense if you have found a cheap online fare. The fastest run is 65 minutes, some journeys detour via Heathrow, and it ends at Victoria Coach Station on Buckingham Palace Road, a separate building from the railway station.
The taxi kiosks in both terminals belong to Airport Cars Gatwick, which does not publish its fares online. If you want to know the price before you land, book a car before you fly.
