For most journeys, no. Between Gatwick and London Victoria the Gatwick Express saved one or two minutes over Southern at midday, yet it charges £24.00 on contactless at any hour against £10.70 off-peak on Southern. If you are heading for London Bridge, Farringdon or St Pancras it is the wrong train entirely, because Thameslink goes there directly. It justifies its fare in a few narrow cases, which are set out below. Every fare and time here was checked on 2026-09-27 and can change, so confirm with the operator before you travel.
Three services, one station
All three leave from the same station inside the South Terminal. What separates them is where they end up and what they charge.
| Service | Where it goes in London | Midday time | Daytime frequency | Contactless single |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gatwick Express | London Victoria only, non-stop | 31 min each way | 2 an hour | £24.00 at all times |
| Southern | London Victoria, via East Croydon and Clapham Junction | 32 min from Gatwick, 33 min to it | About 4 an hour | £10.70 off-peak, £19.20 peak |
| Thameslink | London Bridge, Farringdon, St Pancras and beyond | 28–35 min to London Bridge, from 44 min to St Pancras | 8 an hour to London Bridge | £10.70 off-peak, £19.20 peak to St Pancras |

The Southern peak fare works differently in each direction. Leaving Gatwick, you pay £19.20 only if you touch in between 06:30 and 09:30 on a weekday. Leaving Victoria for the airport, the higher fare also applies from 16:00 to 19:00. For London Bridge, the checked walk-up paper singles ranged from £14.50 to £15.10.
How much time you actually save
At midday the difference is one minute from the airport and two minutes towards it.
The gap opens up late in the evening. Southern trains from Gatwick to Victoria took 36 to 46 minutes in the late evening we checked, against 31 to 36 for the Gatwick Express. But the last Gatwick Express leaves the airport at 23:11, so this advantage lasts only a couple of hours.
Waiting time usually matters more than running time. The Gatwick Express leaves the airport at 10 and 40 minutes past the hour. Walk onto the concourse at quarter past and the next one is 25 minutes off, while a Southern train to Victoria runs about every quarter of an hour. On most arrivals a Southern train will get you to Victoria first simply because it leaves first.
The fare difference, worked through
These examples use the contactless fares recorded on the Gatwick to Victoria and Victoria to Gatwick pages. Each person pays with their own card.
| Trip | Southern | Gatwick Express | Extra for Gatwick Express |
|---|---|---|---|
| One adult, Gatwick to Victoria, Saturday afternoon | £10.70 | £24.00 | £13.30 |
| Two adults, Gatwick to Victoria, touching in at 08:00 on a weekday | £38.40 | £48.00 | £9.60 |
| Four adults, Gatwick to Victoria, off-peak | £42.80 | £96.00 | £53.20 |
| One adult, Victoria to Gatwick, leaving at 17:30 on a weekday | £19.20 | £24.00 | £4.80 |

The last row is the closest the two get. The four-adult row is the hardest to defend: £53.20 for a minute or two.
There is a second cost that is easy to miss. TfL counts Southern and Thameslink journeys to and from Gatwick towards its daily caps, which in 2026 are £24.10 off-peak and £40.80 peak for Gatwick with Zones 1 to 6. It lists Gatwick Express journeys as outside the caps. Ride the Gatwick Express in and then use the Tube for the rest of the day, and the £24.00 sits on top of everything else you spend.
When Gatwick Express is worth it
- It is on the platform and the next Southern to Victoria is well behind it. You are paying £13.30 off-peak to skip the wait. After a long flight that can be a fair trade.
- You are leaving Victoria on a weekday between 16:00 and 19:00. Southern costs £19.20 then, so the non-stop train is £4.80 more, not £13.30.
- You are going to Brighton, Monday to Saturday. This is the one journey where it costs nothing extra. Gatwick Express and Thameslink share the same £9.90 to £11.50 fare range, and Gatwick Express took 26 to 30 minutes against 30 to 33 on Thameslink. It does not run to Brighton on Sundays. See Gatwick to Brighton.
- You would rather not share the train with passengers boarding at Clapham Junction and East Croydon. Gatwick Express makes no stops, while Southern calls at both.
GTR’s own load-weighing counts show when that last point is worth paying for. In rail period 2026-27 P05 (trains weighed as they left the station, 26 July to 22 August 2026), the typical weekday Southern train leaving Gatwick for Victoria between 09:00 and 12:00 carried enough people to fill 80% of its seats, against 38% on the Gatwick Express. From 16:00 to 19:00 the gap was 51% against 24%. Towards the airport, the busiest weekday stretch for both was 16:00 to 19:00, at 66% of seats on Southern and 54% on the Gatwick Express. The counts cover four summer weeks, so read them as the pattern, not a promise for your train.
When it is not
- Anywhere Thameslink serves. London Bridge, Farringdon, St Pancras and the City are on Thameslink’s direct line. Taking the Gatwick Express means changing at Victoria. TfL’s through fare for Southern plus the Victoria line to King’s Cross St Pancras was £13.50 off-peak for 50 to 53 minutes, against £10.70 and 44 minutes on the fastest direct Thameslink. TfL’s through fares leave the Gatwick Express out, so choosing it adds its own £24.00 before the Tube leg. See Gatwick to St Pancras and Gatwick to London Bridge.
- East Croydon. Gatwick Express does not stop there. Southern and Thameslink take 15 minutes for £4.10 off-peak. See Gatwick to East Croydon.
- On a budget or in a group. The table above shows how fast the premium grows. If you are weighing the train against a car for a group, the break-even calculator does the arithmetic.
- Late at night. The last Gatwick Express leaves Gatwick at 23:11 and Victoria at 22:59. After that the choice is between Southern, whose last direct train to Victoria leaves Gatwick at 23:55, and the overnight options in our after-midnight guide.
- Early in the morning. The first Southern from Gatwick, at 05:38, reaches Victoria before the first Gatwick Express.
A word on the gates at Victoria
At Victoria the gateline you use decides the fare. The Gatwick Express gates, usually platforms 13 and 14, charge its higher fare. The Southern gates, usually platforms 15 to 19, charge the lower one. If you mean to take Southern, go through the Southern gates. Our contactless and Oyster guide covers this and other ways people pay more than they need to.
The short version
The name on our domain is not advice. Gatwick Express is a non-stop train with one fare at all hours, but at 2026 fares it is rarely the best value, and for much of London it goes to the wrong station. To plan backwards from a flight, use the leave-by calculator.
Times and fares on this page were checked on 2026-09-27 using TfL’s fare finder and journey planner for a weekday, plus the operators’ own pages. Timetables, fares and weekend engineering work change, so confirm with the operator before you travel.
